About Steve

Teacher and Labor Advocate

I taught US History and Government in the Berea City Schools for 35 years. I worked to engage and empower students with an awareness of where we as Americans have been, and how each of us can shape the future through participatory democracy.

As a public school employee, I was also personally involved in the ongoing fight for workers' rights. I served on the Executive Council of the Ohio Federation of Teachers from 2006-13. I was also Vice President of Political and Legislative Affairs for the Berea Federation of Teachers from 2008-13.

In the 2011 campaign to repeal the union-busting SB 5 legislation, I organized local efforts by the Berea Federation of Teachers, and personally lobbied state legislators and knocked on hundreds of doors.

“Steve will take with him to the Statehouse a passion, dedication, and fierce commitment to schools, communities, and individual rights.” - Melissa Cropper, President, Ohio Federation of Teachers

Democratic Activism

During Barack Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns, I volunteered as a neighborhood team leader through Organizing for America. I also helped OFA with grassroots outreach and education about the Affordable Care Act in 2009.

In both 2012 and 2016 I attended the Democratic National Convention as an elected delegate. In 2013 I received a Shoemaker Fellowship to attend the Ohio Democratic Leadership Institute.

I became a field organizer for Bernie Sanders's campaign in 2016. After the campaign I helped reorganize local volunteers as the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus, and have served as CCPC's political director since then.

"Steve Holecko knows what it means to stand up and fight for students and working families against Republican efforts to slash education budgets and curtail rights." - Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America
